Great book to learn about TDD and how to make the best out of it.

This book provides an excellent learning artifact and reference to the Test-Driven Development practice. Even if you have already used TDD in your software projects or continue to use it, you will benefit a lot of reading this book, because it will show you how to take the most out of using TDD with Python's unittest built-in module in a simple software application to follow. The book is also very easy and accessible to read. It makes the reader acknowledge all the power of TDD and the tools the author uses to extend the TDD practice is a value asset to use on any software project.

Why this is a great book to me:

- The TDD approach is carefully explained and the importance of using it in our software projects;
- The software application the author uses as an example on how to use TDD is simple to understand, and it is a real world software application, not an abstract example; We go carefully into every module of this application while improving our application with TDD;
- This book covers Refactoring Patterns and Anti-Patterns and how to avoid recurrent Code Smells;
- Explains how to use Mock Objects to test interactions between multiple objects;
- Tells us how to deal with legacy code which have no tests. This is a must-read chapter!
- Shows us how to maintain our test suite with docstrings, custom test class hierarchies, fixtures, helper methods, custom assert matches, equality functions and matchers to make our code more readable;
- Covers executable documentation with Python's doctest module, on methods, classes, modules and packages;
- Shows us how to extend Python's unittest with nose2, a powerful third-party tool and plugin suite;
- Covers Unit Test Patterns, from Mocking Patterns, Spies, Generator functions, to Mocking with Mutable Arguments;
- A rich set of powerful tools is gathered in this book: from third-party tools and Python's built-in modules, build tools, packaging tools, continuous integration tools, documentation tools and current TDD IDE integration;
- Python 3.4 throughout this book, although the author has compiled an annex on how to use the code samples in Python 2.6 as well.

Overall, this is a great book to read and to use in every software development process. After reading this book I can't think of any reason why any software projects shouldn't have tests anymore, and shouldn't be continuous integrated as well. This book shows exactly how to achieve the best out of the TDD approach with the current tools in Python 3. It's well worth a read and to have at hand, no doubt.

Good info, could use some revisions

I was really excited to review this book. I've already read the Django TDD book by Henry Percival and covered the Testing Python book by David Sale, they were both really informative and covered TDD principles and tools in a manner I found clear and easy to understand. That being said, this book started to lose me around the 3rd chapter. Here's my analysis:

Pros:
-The author covers a lot of really good topics related to TDD. Code smells, refactoring, how to address a pre-existing code base that you're walking into for the first time were all topics I found to be really helpful.
-The book challenged me to learn about Python topics that I had not previously known about. I wasn't sure how @classmethod worked or what the setUpClass method did in unittesting, but I certainly looked them up when the book presented them to me and was sure to fully understand them before proceeding.
-The code coverage is available on GitHub, which is always great, so you can follow along easily.

Cons:
-I felt like the organization of the book started to slack around the 2nd chapter in Exploring the Rule classes. The whole point of TDD is for the programmer to write the tests first and the implementation code 2nd. We make the tests fail, we write code until it passes, we move on. Then we refactor. Great. Why, in the 2nd chapter, are we then presented with implementation code (no tests), then a discussion of TDD principles, followed by "here's the tests and they should pass".
-Further to this point, it started to get difficult to read in chapter 3 which begins discussion of a new functionality, dual crossover moving average. Immediately, we get the implementation code (again, no tests) followed by a discussion about renaming variable and renaming method refactoring methods, both of which involve running the tests first to make sure they pass. When it comes time to implement this code, the author simply says "the tests are in the exercise section". So I'm supposed to read up to that point, then skip to the end to check out the exercises and get the tests, then go back and continue working on the code base? Furthermore, I am looking at the exercises as I type this and there is no presentation of those tests whatsoever.
-Finally, while the book does cover some good topics, there are times when it gets a little off topic (I guess). For instance, in the section regarding commenting styles, we begin discussion about how to properly write comments (of course). However, rather than applying this to the current code base and application we are working on, the author gives an example of determining if people are old enough to receive a senior citizen discount. I know this is a simple example, but why switch gears when we could have easily applied this to what was being worked on (there was a presentation of a very poorly written method at the beginning of the chapter).

All in all, I wouldn't say this was a poor book, I've read some O'Reilly work that could make you want to quit programming altogether, but I do think there could be some effective revisions to make it easier to read and understand. I have a lot of respect for authors who decide to take on TDD as it is a discipline and requires constant effort and attention. That being said, I would recommend this book to review the principles and topics discussed, but not necessarily to follow along in a step by step manner.

Great introduction and in-depth explanation of Testing in Python.

Cons:
- Kindle format text is WAY too big (at least on my device) - they're looking into getting this fixed if they can
- Packt Publishing didn't do the best job with editing. There are quite a few (not a LOT, but enough to be a bit annoying) mistakes of all kinds. Missing words, code mistakes, typos, etc.
- A TDD book that only starts off showing TDD, then mostly doesn't show tests until after showing the code.

Pros:
+ Great at introducing TDD and unit testing in python, then really digging into the more advanced stuff.
+ First thing I've found that explains Python's built-in mocking framework very well.
+ Doesn't repeat too much and doesn't move too quickly

Note: Only 3 or 4 (out of 10) chapters are truly about TDD as opposed to just unit testing. It's up to you whether this is good or bad.

Amazing in every way.

I couldn't put this book down once I started reading it. I've always admired Selena so much. Her beauty and amazing talent touched many. She will forever be missed. I have been looking forward to reading this book for a while now. I didn't want to buy it at first because Selena & Chris' story hurts my heart so much. I couldn't imagine the heartache from that tragic incident, which SHOULDN'T have happened, and I'll never understand why. I just loved this book from start to finish. I can't thank Chris Perez enough for writing this so that Selena's fans could imagine what a beautiful life they had together, and truly see what an amazing person she was. The pictures in the book brought me to tears. Selena and Chris were so in love and the cutest couple on the planet.
Selena is such an inspiration. Her voice unlike anything ever heard, taken away for absolutely no reason. The book broke my heart and sewed it back together all in one. Chris moved on with his life, and that's really hard to imagine, moving on in life without someone you cared so much for, I can truly relate to his pain. After I read the book I couldn't help but keep thinking to myself what could have been. One thing I know for sure, the world would be a much better place if Selena was still here. A Genuine Memoir...

I loved Selena and loved her music (and all her albums are regular plays on my iPod). I was 12 years old when Selena was murdered and I still remember exactly where I was when the news broke and what an upsetting moment it was. So when MAC announced its Selena line, I immediately got excited and headed back down the path of Selena nostalgia, which included googling and stumbling across news of this book! A Selena book by Chris Perez?! How did I not know about this?! I immediately downloaded a digital copy and began reading.

This book is perfect for any Selena fan. This book not only introduces you to Selena the star, but takes you into Selena's world and by the end, you feel like Selena was your friend. Chris does not gloss things over - he writes about Selena, Abraham, The Quintanilla family, Yolanda, all with a sense of sincerity, honesty and transparency, all while being very respectful.

Knowing what happened to Selena, the book carries a constant sense of dread for the reader, only because you love Selena's relationships and life so much, you don't want to see it come to its shattering end (again). But this book is honestly a beautiful piece of work, a labor of love and a way for Selena fans to be placed into Selena's world for a short period of time. I loved being transported back to the 90s and the simplicity of that era I grew up in. I loved every bit of this, barring those last pages which made me cry all over again. RIP Selena - your spirit is still alive today.

I would give this book more than 5 stars if it let me. This book no doubts absolutely amazing. The way Chris speaks about Selena and their feelings towards eachother is just beautiful. I recommend this book 200%. Not only will it teach you about what a beautiful person Selena was inside and out, but it will teach you on how to not take life for granted. Wonderful job Chris Perez. RIP Selena.

I was introduced to Ohara about two months ago. Have read three novels. I am about 40% through the short stories. Many of the stories have a similar theme but they are still great stories. Ohara is one talented writer.

Really funny and creative, guffaw-inducing, comedy

It says right on the cover "A PARODY !!!", referring both to the history of the world, and to Facebook. This comical frolic redacts the world history as a series of Facebook wall snippets among imaginary and not so imaginary user accounts. In doing so Mr. Overstreet cunningly parodies both Facebook conventions (etiquette, language, humor) and Historical pretensions (merging both scientific, religious, political, and chronological modes that otherwise would never be caught dead in the same book).

I recommend this highly to anyone who enjoys a good laugh, and who takes neither themselves nor Facebook nor the history of the world too seriously.

Now excuse me while I go un-friend god.

Clever, humorous and even educational

Facebook can be educational? Surely you jest. I'll admit I'm on Facebook at most twice a Week so I'm hardly what you'd call an avid user. However, even a casual user can appreciate "The World According to Facebook" and find its humor laugh out loud hilarious. Wylie Overstreet probably wasn't the only person with this idea but his posts on the CoolMaterial.com website caught on like wildfire and for good reason. In "The World According to Facebook" Overstreet further explores the "what ifs" of the world's history as Facebook statuses. Covering everything from the birth of the Universe to the dawn of the human race and all of mankind's ups and downs, it's all touched upon in this book. The real gem is in the author's witty presentation combined with modern day jargon and the laziness of the English language that's so prevalently used today. Here are my thoughts on The World According to Facebook;

Pros

+ Extremely quick-witted and often un-politically correct humorous status updates. Even the chapter introductions were snarky and funny. Several of the avatars used to represent the poster were also good for a few laughs.

+ Educational. It actually caused me to have to look up a few things just to understand the joke. Personal favorites were the sections dealing with religion and all its influences (Crusades, Joan of Arc etc.), World War II, Classical Western Civilization and the Renaissance.

+ Quick and easy read.

Cons

- Not all of the humor hits the mark.

- Too short. Takes roughly 30-45 minutes to read cover to cover. I wanted more after the book was over. There's so much more of the world's history to parody.

To quote the author, "Ah, Facebook. We all make fun of it, and we're all on it. If the Facebook community --600 million strong-- were a country, it would rank third in population and last in spelling ability." The author isn't afraid to poke fun at even the most serious of situations or establishments. Overstreet is an equal opportunity offender and that's a good thing because we all need to laugh at ourselves from time to time. Perfect for the bus ride home or bedside reading, "The World According to Facebook" is short but sweet and had me snickering with a grin page after page.

Sometimes - Funny is Just what I need.. really funny.

This book is light, witty - and makes you chuckle at the historical allusions. It made me feel smart - and cracked me up at the same time.

This is a book that makes me realize I know more about facebook than I ever would admit - and makes me laugh just the same. It is just the mix between escapism and realism - that I enjoy. I loved reading and I am going to enjoy leafing it in my guest room for my visitors. I know they will be happier for it.

A Student's Perspective

The word BORING is what usually comes to mind when I read textbooks for my classes. They are not something I look forward to because I typically drift off into never-never-land. Usually they're missing some dynamic, and as a result they just don't seem to capture my attention.
However, this textbook sparked a DIFFERENT reaction in me. First off, I found the futures and opinions market interesting and the material in the textbook easy to understand. It was teeming with examples and diagrams that enhanced my grasp on the fundamentals behind the market. Unlike other textbooks, I found that I ENJOYED the reading. In particular, I enjoyed the numerous real-world applications provided in the boxes throughout the chapters.
I believe the greatest asset in this book are these real-world applications like: how price movements in the orange juice markets market could forecast freezing temperatures better than the U.S. National Weather service, to the enormous role hedging plays for the airline industries. By intertwining stimulating examples into the required nitty-gritty, it held my attention. I thought reading this textbook was both educational and FUN. It sparked in me a new-found enthusiasm in futures and opinions.

Futures and Options Markets

This is written by a professor of agricultural economics at UC Davis. The guy has a Ph.d from Berkeley. He has taught a course called "Futures and Options Markets" for about 20 years. I took the course and read the whole book. Now that I am several years out from then and have learned a lot more about the subject, I have realized this book was way above average. The best selling books are not always the best. It doesn't go into depth about how to write options or use different derivative strategies, but it does provide a very secure introduction into the subject of futures and basic hedging with options. Basically the best read I had in my undergraduate years.
