As prolific editor Ashley shows in this third comic fantasy anthology, a mix of reprints and original tales, humor comes in many varieties, but it's the most fragile of literary forms, often not traveling or aging well. Such a story as Stan Nicholls's "Polly Put the Mockers On" remains untranslatably British. Wizards, nearly all British, pop up drearily in far too many of the entries. In her heavy-handed, wizard-laden pastiche of Damon Runyon, "Broadway Barbarian," Cherith Baldry manages to convert gold to lead. More successful on the whole are the reprints, notably Porter Emerson Browne's "The Diplodocus" (1908), about a Luther Burbank type who combines animal instead of plant species with hilarious results, and Nelson Bond's "Nothing in the Rules" (1943), an ingratiating romp about horse racing and a rakish, scholarly centaur. Sheer silliness pays off in the opening tale, John Cleese and Connie Booth's "Happy Valley," later adapted for an episode of Monty Python's Flying Circus. More serious silliness underlies Avram Davidson's delightful Ruritanian pastiche, "Milord Sir Smiht, the English Wizard." In the shaggy dog category, with their punning twists, are James Bibby's "Pale Assassin" and Jack Sharkey's "The Blackbird." And Scott Edelman's all-dialogue "You'll Never Walk Alone" is the ultimate "magnetic personality" story. While only a dozen or so of the volume's 32 tales rank as truly "awesome," the laughs come often enough. Try it, you'll like it.

What to expect from "The Mammoth Book of Awesome Comic Fantasy"--a mosaic of waggish rogues and wayward wizards, misinformed planet-skippers, and would-be assassins in the grain...and from the skies. I recommend reading the book starting with the hyperactive final tale, "You'll Never Walk Alone Again"; its frenetic rhythm demands your perception be sharply angled! "Put Down that Universe!" is the second-to-last tale and features characters equally extraordinary and intriguing. Other meritorious additions: "Dragonet", "Nothing in the Rules", "How Much Would You Pay?","Math Takes a Holiday", "Polly Put the Mockers On", and "The Absolute and Utter Impossibility of the Facts in the Case of the Vanishing of Henning Vok"...On the flip side, skip "Ferdie", "Milord Sir Smiht...", "Touched By a Salesman", "The Swords and the Stones", "Fair Weather Fiend" and "Mother Duck Strikes Again". TEDIOUS!! Overall, great book...

Not sure what's up with the one star review

The stories are witty, clever and well-written. Can't imagine how someone could give this one star. It fits very well into the canon of tongue-in-check, humorous amusing fantasy. Kind of in the same vein as the disc world books or hitchhikers guide. That is, this isn't LOTR - it's comic fantasy. And a fantastic collection of it. Now maybe one doesn't like comic fantasy - one is certainly entitled to that - but the titles is hardly misleading. I just pick it up and read a story now and then - maybe 10-20 pages - and I'm always wanting to share it with someone during and/or after.

I am disappointed in this

I am disappointed in this. I have been a fan of the Comic Fantasy anthologies. Loved the previous editions but this one sucked. I'm sorry to be so blunt about it but, really, it did. Most of the stories seemed to be of the gumshoe variety and not very humorous at that. Oh, there are a few that were noteworthy (as in all anthologies) but, on the whole, the stories weren't very interesting. Now, I did notice that a lot of the authors were deceased so maybe these stories were written years ago...? I guess I'm trying to figure out where the awesomeness comes in....

BarCharts are a great - but condensed - overview of the black letter law.

What BarCharts are NOT: a comprehensive study guide. You cannot do well on a law school exam or bar exam relying solely upon BarCharts. That is not their purpose.

What BarCharts ARE: a condensed overview of the black letter law. Use them as a quick reference to understand the material during the semester. Use them as a REVIEW of the material you (should) have already studied for the exam.

In law school, BarCharts were the last thing I skimmed over before taking an exam. It's a good refresher.

Same with the bar exam. I skimmed over my BarCharts both nights before the exam.

Nicely targeted to the second-time architect.

My context: I helped build a system with a Rails "middle end" that talked to about eight microservices, and then moved that from Heroku to AWS. So I'm not a novice, but I still have a lot to learn. This book is nicely targeted at people like me. In fact, throughout I was thinking "I'll use this as a checklist next time I'm building a system" and then I was pleased to discover that the final, summary chapter is essentially that checklist.

My only negative comments are these:
* The writing up until chapter 4 seemed somewhat dry, then picked up its pace and became more conversational. However, the earlier chapters' topics are important (and used throughout the book), so don't skip them.
* There's some jargon in the text that's unexplained. Most of it I already knew or could puzzle out, but I'm still curious what a "full-fat virtual machine" is. A glossary would have been nice.

Excellent introduction to microservices

This book is an amagelmation of the best practices for build large, scalable system. Topics range from: design patterns, API design, continus integration, continus delivery, testing, automation, virtualized environment and containers, monitor, security, database and CAP theorem.

All of the concepts are covered (not the implementations). When more details are required, the author recommends other (well known) books for references. As for software/tools, a few interesting ones are recommened, and it is up to the reader to investigate more details - Understandable as the software landscape changes rapidly.

Recommended reading for architect, engineer and DevOps!

Misleading Title

I found the title misleading... This is not a book about some new architectural concept or in-depth analysis regarding latest trends in Web Services. The book is an enumeration of good architectural practices with little value for the hands-on professional. (Little value not because they should be ignored, but because hands-on professional already masters them!) Very readable, with a good flow, the book covers high level concepts like: avoid tied couple components, event base systems, synchronous vs. asynchronous... and later goes on to common software practices such as: versioning, logging, deployment, continuous code integration, authentication and authorization... I see the book as a good material for a student starting in this field or managers trying to grasp these concepts. But I can only infer this was not the intended targeted audience.

Middle-to-low quality book for newbies searching for an easy staring point on the transformers' field

The book contain some insight on power transformers and reactors but most of its content can be found, in more detailed explanation, on other sources. For sure it gives at least a list of every aspect in the industry (even air core reactors are mentioned, which are usually left out) but more often then not in a very superficial and not meaningful way; also, the basic information is repeated several times in different chapters. One time would be enough and would have spared some space for some more basic analysis of the listed aspects.

Some examples:
Short-circuit inductance calculation doesn't mention rogowsky coefficient (!!!)
Chapter 24 (short-circuit) is pointless (e.g.: you have to correctly design the pressure ring, the frame, etc... without giving any any formula or even design parameters)
Final chapters (25 and above) are meaningless.

Anyway the quality is quite constant (on the low end) throughout most of the chapters thanks to the editing team but some chapters suffers from more "dumbed down" source material then others (the do/no not list of the bushing chapter seems directly addressed at low skilled workers in a third world country, not to the reader of a engineering book...). Some parts are more of an advertising for BHEL but it may be understood as it's sold from them (same can be said on "Short-circuit strength of power transformers" by Giorgio Bertagnolli on ABB favor).
Pictures are very low quality and definitely not significant to add any kind of value.

If you are looking for a good book on transformers there are better options like "Transformer Engineering: Design, Technology, and Diagnostics" by S.V. Kulkarni, S.A. Khaparde or "Transformer Design Principles: With Applications to Core-Form Power Transformers" by M. Del Vecchio et al.

Imaginary Games is a Game Changer

Chris Bateman is a man of many talents, but the one I know him best is as a philosopher. I first learned of him through his blog (...)and immediately realized the importance of what he was trying to do. Games, and videogames (it's one word! Chris will tell you why) in particular are in a strange spot both intellectually and aesthetically. Mr. Bateman considers the ramifications of where games began, where they are now, and where they will be in the future with a prescience that is all at once confounding (make no mistake, the book is very dense!) and deeply relevant to the current state of videogame culture and design.

I would not recommend this book to everyone, but if you are serious about understanding the larger philosophical ideas behind videogames, Imaginary Games is all at once a primer and a master's class. Also, if you enjoyed his book, make sure to check out his blog!

Playing Art

I enjoyed Imaginary Games a great deal, and it is interesting in particular in that it further explores the relation between art, fiction, and play from a philosophical perspective. Turning the question "are games art?" on its head, Bateman argues along with some other philosophers that art itself, fiction, imagination, and make-believe, all involve some form of play, an acceptance of arbitrary boundaries in order to be able to interpret art in a meaningful way.

As usual, Bateman writes very accessably, but without dumbing down his message and philosophy. An essential book if you're interested in the relation between art and play, and a good summary of some earlier thinkers' ideas as well, combined with Bateman's own perspective.

Philosophy and Games

As I knew Bateman's work on game design I was really interested in seeing what Imaginary Games would be. Bateman is a solid philosopher and does a good read on art and philosophy, but it wasn't as specific as I had hoped that it would be. Not that this was a bad thing at all, but just not what I was looking for at the moment and necessarily what I felt like I had been promised. Now being familiar with this book I know how to use it and who to recommend it for. I am anxious to see what comes next from Bateman in the humanities realm.
