The First and Last Book You'll Ever Need on Herbs

Look no further, this book will give you everything you ever wanted to know and more about herbs. The only thing else you might want is a more elaborate book on herb garden design...but don't be dismayed the section on herb garden design is very complete and inspiring.
ACTUALLY TELLS YOU HOW TO USE THEM! My wife and I love to use herbs particularly culinary, tea, and medicinal. This was the only book we came across that had detailed and useful information that was easily understood on how to use herbs in practical ways.
The book covers garden design, making herbal decorations, use in the kitchen with many recipes, household uses of herbs, beauty care use of herbs, essential oils, health uses of herbs, cultivation and harvesting of herbs and a very complete index of over 100 herbs. The herbal index is great. It contains full color photographs of the foliage, flowers, seed, dried leaves, and roots as applicable to each herb. A short history is given along with cultivation, harvest information, and uses (including what parts for what use).
It has a nice section on making potpourri. The beauty use section is complete with recipes. The table of essential oils is very complete and useful. The health section describes different general preparation techniques and an A-Z guide of ailments with accompanying herbal remedies. The herb cultivating section is complete and useful.
The title says it all, get this book and you will learn something new about herbs every time you pick it up. We reference it all the time. It is invaluable to any gardening or health library.

Absolutely EVERYTHING you need from an herb book!

You truly could not ask for a more complete reference on growing and using herbs. Lesley Bremness' book, beautifully illustrated throughout with sumptuous color photographs, is the first book I turn to for all my herb-related questions, whether they relate to garden planning, how tall a particular herb will grow, or an herbal remedy for dry skin. She provides extensive, well-organized, easy-to-read information on the cultivation and uses of perhaps 100 herbs, going well beyond the "usual suspects" to include such herbs as Elecampane, Melilot, and Houseleek.
One of the best aspects of the book is its 100+ page "Herbal Index." A full page (sometimes two) is dedicated to each variety, with good-sized color photos depicting the stem, leaf, seed, flower, root, dried flowers, dried leaves, crushed roots, other varieties, etc. A small photo tops of the growing plant tops a sidebar. This approach makes herb identification much easier than the books that rely on the garden glam shots where the herb looks gorgeous but its particulars can be difficult to see. Each herb page begins with a description of any lore historically ascribed to the plan and perhaps the origins of its name. For instance, the Borage description notes that the Old Masters often used the "beautiful pure blue" flowers to paint the Madonna's robe.
The sidebars in the Herbal Index pack an amazing amount of information into a relatively small amount of space: Details about cultivation, including soil and sunlight preferences, harvesting and preservation, and the decorative, culinary, household, cosmetic, and medicinal uses of its various parts. More details on the uses can be found in the "Using Herbs" sections.
Interspersed in the Herbal Index are certain theme sections depicting a handful of herbs grown for flowers or foliage and salad herbs, for instance.
The one drawback to the Herbal Index, as other reviewers have noted, is its arrangement by Latin name, rather than common name. Since the common name appears in good-sized print, flipping through to find what you're looking for isn't burdensome. Resorting to the thorough index at the end is another option.
This drawback is more than made up for by the thorough information in the Herbal Index and the 100 pages of well-illustrated uses for herbs. Here, the ideas go well beyond the usual recipes for meals and potpourri. The Herbal Decorations chapter includes lovely photographs of nosegays annotated with the Victorian language of flowers meanings, herbal garlands, herbal wreaths, and herbal table decorations. The culinary section features recipes for herbs the average person doesn't think to cook with, such as lovage soup and a marigold glaze for ham. The Herbs for the Household chapter discusses natural ways to deter pests using herbs, a marjoram-based furniture wax, horsetail "scouring pads," plus instructions for herbal dyes, herbal papers, scented ink, herbal toys, and a perfumed box. A variety of soaps, facial cleansers, bath additives, facial steams, floral waters and hair rinses appear in the Herbs for Beauty chapter. The Herbs for Health organizes medicinal uses of herbs alphabetically by ailment.
The book begins with a section on herb garden design. Among the themes illustrated are plans for a moonlight garden, a delightful circular children's garden, a Chinese garden, and an Egyptian-style paradise garden. Bremness also provides plans for gardens ranging in size from containers on a patio to a small corner of a yard to a large all-purpose garden (which seems to truly have a bit of everything). The planning section is the one place in the book where Bremness relies on some finely detailed color pencil drawings rather than photographs, although she still mixes in a delectable array of inspiring color photos.
"The Complete Book of Herbs" is a resource that herb gardeners, whether novice or experienced, will turn to again and again. I continue to find it as useful today as when I started my first garden some seven years ago. Treat yourself to the hardback edition if you can find it and afford it. It's well worth the investment.

Terrific reference material

Growing one's herbs is satisfying but using them completes the cycle. If you've ever wondered what to do with all the herbs you've managed to put in your garden over the years this book can help you. If you are just starting out with herbs this book can get you going properly. Not only does it have recipes but it has some ideas that I never could have imagined let alone used. The bulk of the book is dedicated to the herbal index which is extremely helpful. Each illustrated herb is broken down and expalined simply as to it's use, from root to leaves. The only problem I found with this section is that it is organized by their botanical names, which unless you're so inclined is difficult to find quickly. This is a minor problem that is remedied by the oversized common name, which of course is not alphabetized but more recognizable. A page is dedicated to over 100 of the most common herbs used. It tells you how to cultivate the individual herb and it's uses, which includes the medicinal use. Even if I don't use all the herbs or have them growing in my garden it is fascinating to know the historical and contemporary use of herbs. This book is a constant learning experience that can be read over and over. A perfect garden companion for that break under a tree. The knowledge can prove to be invaluable. Even such common herbs as Thyme can present posssibly new insights into it's benefits. Have trouble sleeping? The leaves of Thyme can help insomnia as well as stimulate the production of white corpusules to resist infection amongst it's many other attributes. There is much more information than I need here but there is something for everyone, from herbal dyes, to baths and massages and to the ever popular potpourri. This is, as the title suggests, the complete book on herbs. A great book for the kichen or to help you plan your herb garden, this book has as many uses as the author presents uses for the herbs.

Interesting addition

I only needed this book for a paper but I was surprised by how much I enjoyed it.It made a great addition to my library. Some texts were slightly confusing to grasp so I had to go over them again to fully understand all the details but atleast every passage has a short introduction at the beginning that summarizes the main idea, there by making it easier to understand.

Crais (The Politics of Evil) and Scully (Liberating the Family) chase down obscure references to Baartman's life in South Africa and discover a rich if difficult life: a woman who loved and lost and traveled farther (from Cambedoo and Cape Town to London and Paris) than many of her peers. Modern forest products research had its start hardly fifty years ago. In 1936 the senior author published a book entitled, "Technologie des Holzes", which was a first approach to a universal reference book on wood technology. The first edition of Volume I of the Textbook of Wood Technology, co-authored by H. P. BROWN, A. J. P AN SHIN , and C. C. FORSAITH, was published in 1948. An indication of the rapid development of this field can be gained from the fact that the second edition of "Technologie des Holzes und der Holzwerkstoffe", completely revised, was needed by 1951. It contains 2233 pages compared with the 764 pages of the 1936 edition.

About the Author
Robert Roswell Palmer, a former professor of history at Princeton University, was educated at the University of Chicago and Cornell University, where he received his Ph.D. in 1934. His books include Catholics and Unbelievers in Eighteenth-Century France, Twelve Who Ruled: The Year of the Terror in the French Revolution, and the two-volume Age of the Democratic Revolution, the first volume of which won the Bancroft Prize. A former president of the American Historical Association, he has received honorary degrees from universities around the world, and was awarded the Antonio Feltrinelli International Prize for History in 1990. He and his wife live in Newtown, Pennsylvania.

Joel Colton taught in Duke University’s history department for forty-two years. He was educated at City College of New York and Columbia University, which awarded him his Ph.D. in 1950. He is a fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, and has been a Phi Beta Kappa lecturer and the recipient of Guggenheim, Rockefeller, and National Endowment for the Humanities fellowships. His books include Léon Blum: Humanist in Politics, for which he received a Mayflower Award. He has cowritten, with R. R. Palmer, the previous eight editions of A History of the Modern World. He lives in Durham, North Carolina.

Lloyd Kramer is a professor of history at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill. His books include Threshold of a New World: Intellectuals and the Exile Experience in Paris, 1830–1848 and Lafayette in Two Worlds: Public Cultures and Personal Identities in an Age of Revolutions, which won the Gilbert Chinard Prize and the Annibel Jenkins Biography Prize. He lives in Chapel Hill, North Carolina.

This is THE text of Modern European History

It is difficult to add to what reviewers have already provided. I used this text when I was a classroom AP teacher for a number of reasons. Among those reasons was that while most K-12 textbooks are the product of a committee, (committee- a terrestrial life form having at least six legs and no brain.) this book is largely the work of the late Dr. Robert Roswell Palmer. It was written as if the author felt that the history of Modern Europe was not a collection of chapters but rather a story, a narrative to be read the way one reads a novel. There is a continuity to the writing and an elegance of prose that can only be achieved by a text like this. Dr. Palmer was a wonderful historian and a marvellously accessable teacher who took the time to answer letters personally on his old manual typewriter. His passing is lamented.

Great even for personal use

I would recommend this book to anyone who is interested in history or has a class they need the book for. It provides any information you need, and sometimes information you don't really NEED, but it's interesting the same. It can be a little hard to read at times, and the index isn't very helpful most of the time, but it does what it tells you it will, teaches you about history.

A History of the Modern World is an informative, all-encompassing compendium on European history. I was able to attain a 5 on the AP European History exam independent of teaching instruction and based on this book alone. And yet, even if I hadn't reaped an academic reward from this book, the experience of reading it carries a reward in of itself, for I genuinely feel as though this book changed my perspective on society. As the narrative of European history progresses, from the Renaissance to recent European events, Palmer's eloquent and informative prose allowed me to interpret patterns in social structure, politics, and economics that, I feel, give me a greater perspective on modern society. In that sense, A History of the Modern World is a book that holds great gratification for serious and committed readers- in or outside the classroom.

About the Author
Beverly Kracher, Ph.D. is a native Nebraskan and farmer's daughter. She earned a Ph.D. in philosophy at UNL. Beverly is the Robert B. Dougherty Endowed Chair in Business Ethics & Society at Creighton University's College of Business. She has been a professor at Creighton University for 20 years. She does business ethics consulting with local and national firms. Her articles can be found in academic journals and business magazines. Beverly was a research fellow at the Center for International Business Ethics in Beijing, China in 2007 and has returned to China almost every year since then. Beverly's business experience is a vice-president of an Omaha-based small business. Since 2008, she has also been executive director and president of the Business Ethics Alliance (businessethicsalliance.org), a nonprofit that leads in developing a climate of ethical excellence in the Omaha business community and serves as a beacon for other business communities around the nation and the world. Through the Business Ethics Alliance, she has co-written a series of practical organizational ethics workbooks. Beverly hikes, jogs, reads and goes to baseball games with Jerry.
Jerry Stegeman is a native Nebraskan from Scottsbluff. He earned a BA in philosophy at UNL. He founded and has been CEO of Plant Pros of Omaha, Inc., an Omaha-based interior plantscaping firm, since 1996. An associated benefit of the business has been as a laboratory for understanding and using ethics in the workplace. Jerry likes hiking, music, and loves baseball.

Practical Tool for Ethical Conversations

The Ethinary is a practical tool, intentionally accessible. The disgruntled previous reviewer, Caldwell, unfortunately misses the point. The beauty is in the simplicity. While the authors have expertise and experience in the most theoretical of ethical thinking, writing and interacting, the purpose of The Ethinary [an ethics dictionary] is to spark everyday ethical conversation.

I'm familiar with executives who leave the book on end tables in their lobbies for guests to thumb through, and others who select one ethical term to discuss at regular staff meetings. If you're looking for a tool to facilitate practical thinking and interacting at a higher ethical level, this is one that works from the executive suite to the manufacturing plant floor.

Not Worth The Money

Did a 2nd Grade student write this book? Seriously, I don't know how a person with a Ph.D. and another one with a B.A. could put their names on this drivel. I guess the reason they have these degrees is because they learned how to bilk people out of a lot of money.

Don't waste your money on this garbage. My company Ethics Committee spent thousands of dollars to get everybody their own copy. What an incredible waste of money. Of course, my company is in Nebraska and the writers of the book are also from Nebraska. Coincidence? I don't think so.

This hefty book (250 pages, 8.5" X 11") is chock full of detailed information, personal musings, photos and diagrams, and practical tips. Thomas Elpel is a do-it-yourselfer after my own heart, and what he has compiled here chronicles his adventures of building his own home in rural Montana as well as experiences with other building projects. He and his wife were forced by circumstances to find inexpensive solutions for all of the challenges of building their home, and they managed to do this without sacrificing their commitment to energy efficiency and sustainability.

Their home is a true hybrid, with the first floor being slip-formed stone masonry and the second story of logs, all sourced locally and ecologically. Thomas explains in great detail exactly how he put together this house, sufficiently for others to follow his lead without much more need for instruction.

In addition, the book is liberally dosed with Thomas's philosophy of how to homestead ecologically in the 21st Century. He starts with how to choose an appropriate location, then proceeds to describe strategies for disaster-proofing your home. He emphasizes how important it is to define the goals you have for your home before even coming up with a design.

Part Two of the book explores principles of energy efficiency, delving into a discussion of the need for excellent insulation, coupled with thermal mass and solar gain for a truly ecological house. The pros and cons of various insulation systems are defined, with charts of R-values. etc. There is a chapter devoted to interior air quality.

Part Three launches into the nitty gritty of exactly how to build using the methods that the author is familiar with. There is a thorough review of various strategies for creating footings, foundations and floors. This leads to a primer about the properties of concrete and how to mix and pour it. The instructions for building stone walls are specific to slip-forming, which tends to be fairly straight forward and simpler for folks who are not skilled in the art of free-form stone masonry.

The log-building technique that Thomas chose to use for his house is one of the simpler approaches, where little notching and careful fitting and trimming is required. Round logs are just stacked one on top of the other, using rebar pins to hold them in place. It is possible to build entire walls this way, and then cut out doors and windows later. The spaces between the logs are eventually insulated and chinked to make the wall air tight.

The basics of strawbale building are presented in one chapter, detailing how a large load-bearing strawbale shop was built. The information about strawbale is not as thorough as it is with the previous chapters on stone and log building, but there is enough of an overview to give the reader an idea of what is involved.

All of the wall-building techniques described so far require a framed roof of some sort, and the author goes into some detail about the possibilities for doing this. One method shown is fairly simple and straight forward, where a log ridge pole is placed first, and then rafters are bolted together on top of this, supported at the other end with another log. This can then support a variety of roofing materials, such as metal sheets or shingles.

In order to present a thorough overview of all of the basics of house building, the author also has surprisingly comprehensive chapters on plumbing and electrical wiring. Strategies for solar water and space heating are discussed.

All-in-all I give this book very high marks for providing useful information compiled in a logical and detailed manner. Yet I have seen some million dollar homes that looked like junk. Appearance, like energy efficiency, is more a product of design than of cost. "With a combined income averaging $10,000 to $12,000 a year we lived simply and invested everything we could in building materials. Construction proceeded slowly throughout the process, due to our chronic lack of money. We moved into the house after the second summer, with no doors, few windows, and no insulation in the roof. Winter stopped about three feet from the stove. This might all seem a little rough, but I later realized that we saved at least $150,000 in interest payments by eliminating the need for a loan. That is not a bad wage for a couple years of camping out!"

Looking for Slipform (slip form) stone masonry info?

While the author is a knowledgeable on the subject, if you are looking for a book that covers the topic in greater detail then check out Tomm Stanley's book "Stone House: A Guide to Self-Building With Slipforms". The material is covered in greater detail and in a well thought out manner.

How integrated design works with planning
