Great idea, a bit of a disappointing execution

I really, really wanted to love this one. I think our country is in dire need of teaching our children civics and history. And I didn't find this book to be overtly political in one way or the other, it provided some decent background on concepts like elections and voting.
But like others, the main issue I have is with the style. Take the opening line of the book:
"Voting is something / we do every day / It's a way we can choose / that gives us our own say."
Compare it to the opening line of The Cat in the Hat:
"The sun did not shine. / It was too wet to play. / So we sat in the house, / All that cold, cold, wet day"
As another reviewer noted, just because the words rhyme doesn't mean it's Dr. Seuss poetry--not only is the rhyme and meter all wrong, but there's hardly any meter to speak of. Now granted, Dr. Seuss was a talent that comes once in a thousand years, but IMO derivative works like this based on his original characters only water down kids' perspectives of his original books' greatness. While I appreciate many of Bonnie Worth's other books (including some in this series), books like this are only inviting comparisons to the original, and they unfortunately fall far short. I wish that this new generation could create new ideas rather than constantly "reboot" old characters because they're sure money makers.
As far as the contents of the book, it's innocuous enough--I wish it could have done a little more to dispel the myth that a democratic republic is all only about "majority rule" but there's only so much you can say about that in a book for 5-8 year olds. I admittedly cringed a little around page 15-16 when it started to talk about political parties, mentioning the Democratic Party and Republican Party (and the Green Party and Libertarian Party in the index). Seriously, at that age can we let kids just be kids and not force them to start thinking about 'what side' they're on? I wish the contents of this book could have just stuck to the Constitution (which doesn't mention political parties at all).
So a nice effort, and otherwise a nice-looking book with appealing illustrations in the style of Dr. Seuss, but as a civics primer I'm not sure I'd use this. A much, much better option is Schoolhouse Rock!: Election Collection, which can easily work for the same age group and provides much more substance.

Used this as my all-school focus piece for our kindergarten to third grade election event. As other reviewers have said, the story is definitely not Dr. Seussish. Not well written with less-than-stellar rhyming.... That said, though, the book has been good to use because of the other activities associated with it. The associated website with the actual voting for kids to do has been wonderful! We created voting booths, "I had my say, I voted today" stickers and discussed issues/causes that even my youngest students could understand. Mention of, or discussion about, the two leading 2016 presidential candidates was never mentioned. We took the "high road" in election discussion.

I purchased this book to read to my 2nd grade class to go along with the upcoming election. It is packed full of great information at a child's level. It is written in a Dr. Seuss rhyming format that all young children love. Who is running for president in the book? Well..The Cat in the Hat, of course!
