Teaching and Learning for the Twenty-First Century: Educational Goals, Policies, and Curricula from Six NationsFrom Harvard Education Pr

This book describes how different nations have defined the core competencies and skills that young people will need in order to thrive in the twenty-first-century, and how those nations have fashioned educational policies and curricula meant to promote those skills. The book examines six countries—Chile, China, India, Mexico, Singapore, and the United States—exploring how each one defines, supports, and cultivates those competencies that students will need in order to succeed in the current century.

Teaching and Learning for the Twenty-First Century appears at a time of heightened attention to comparative studies of national education systems, and to international student assessments such as those that have come out of PISA (the Program for International Student Assessment), led by the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development. This book’s crucial contribution to the burgeoning field of international education arises out of its special attention to first principles—and thus to first questions: As Reimers and Chung explain, “much can be gained by an explicit investigation of the intended purposes of education, in what they attempt to teach students, and in the related questions of why those purposes and how they are achieved.”

These questions are crucial to education practice and reform at a time when educators (and the students they serve) face unique, pressing challenges. The book’s detailed attention to such questions signals its indispensable value for policy makers, scholars, and education leaders today.

Black Men Can't Shoot, by Scott N. Brooks

The myth of the natural black athlete is widespread, though it’s usually talked about only when a sports commentator or celebrity embarrasses himself by bringing it up in public. Those gaffes are swiftly decried as racist, but apart from their link to the long history of ugly racial stereotypes about black people—especially men—they are also harmful because they obscure very real, hard-fought accomplishments. As Black Men Can’t Shoot demonstrates, such successes on the basketball court don’t happen just because of natural gifts—instead, they grow out of the long, tough, and unpredictable process of becoming a known player.

Scott Norman Brooks spent four years coaching summer league basketball in Philadelphia. And what he saw, heard, and felt working with the young black men on his team tells us much about how some kids are able to make the extraordinary journey from the ghetto to the NCAA. He tells the story of two young men, Jermaine and Ray, following them through their high school years and chronicling their breakthroughs and frustrations on the court as well as their troubles at home. Black Men Can’t Shoot is a moving coming-of-age story that counters the belief that basketball only exploits kids and lures them into following empty dreams—and shows us that by playing ball, some of these young black men have already begun their education even before they get to college.

From School Library Journal
Brooks (sociology, Univ. of California at Riverside), having studied under and been inspired by the highly esteemed Elijah Anderson at the University of Pennsylvania, provides an ethnographic description of recreational basketball in South Philadelphia. A self-professed frustrated former high school basketball player (he blames himself and his former coach for his shortcomings), the author looks at the hopes and dreams of young inner-city black men he coached who aspired to play ball professionally. In true sociological tradition, he presents detailed information on members of the famed Blade Rodgers Neighborhood Development League, based on interviews with these athletes, their families, coaches, and other locals. While focusing on two athletes in particular, Brooks educates readers about a number of "street" realities (e.g., the daily struggle for survival and basketball viewed as a way out of the ghetto). Demystifying certain racial stereotypes, Brooks explains that even God-given skills must be developed through hard work and dedication. His book is a worthy ethnographic text and is recommended especially for students of sports sociology.—Tim Delaney, SUNY at Oswego

Review
“Scott was an average high school basketball player, but Black Men Can’t Shoot is an all-star book. I couldn’t put it down. It cracked me up, put me on edge, and reminded me why I love this game—Chuck, Jermaine, and Ray, the old heads and the young bulls. It’s about the people.” (Jason Kidd, nine-time NBA All-Star)

“This is a smart and authentic book. It not only captures the feel of Philadelphia high school basketball; it provides acute and accurate insight into the minds of players. Although I’m on the other side, I learned something. Most importantly, it’s a moving story that stays with you.” (Fran Dunphy, Head Coach, Temple University)

“Brooks makes clear how contingent the fate of these young men is on the step-by-step negotiation of multiple career steps and how many ways there are to fail. But he also offers a bright note to counter the endless tales of misery from the ghetto by showing us how many second and third and fourth chances there are to recover what seemed to be lost. Black Men Can’t Shoot is compelling—you really want to know what will happen next, and I don’t think anyone who starts to read this book will put it down until they get to the end.” (Howard S. Becker, author of Outsiders)

“Black Men Can’t Shoot is carefully observed, ethnographically rich, and conceptually sophisticated—an original work of importance that provides a powerful eye on the world of black ghetto youth today. A must read for anyone wishing to understand.” (Elijah Anderson, author of Streetwise)

“Brooks represents Philly well. It’s clear that he not only sat on the bench—he learned some things. His writing is right on the money. It took me back to my playing days and the relationships I’ve developed through basketball. From the gym to the playgrounds and uptown, Brooks lets you know what Philly ball is all about.” (Lionel Simmons, third all-time leading NCAA scorer)

“In this vivid depiction of the urban reality of grassroots basketball, Scott Brooks exhibits an insider’s passion for the game, broad and deep knowledge of the local history and social context, and a real feel for the significance of basketball in Philly’s black community. Along with offering important ideas about the relationship between race and sports, Black Men Can’t Shoot is packed with genuine drama and intrigue making it one of those rare books that are both insightful and truly engaging.”

(Douglas Hartmann, author of Race, Culture, and the Revolt of the Black Athlete)

“[Brooks] looks at the hopes and dreams of young inner-city black men he coached who aspired to play ball professionally. In true sociological tradition, he presents detailed information on members of the famed Blade Rodgers Neighborhood Development League, based on interviews with these athletes, their families, coaches, and other locals. While focusing on two athletes in particular, Brooks educates readers about a number of ‘street’ realities (e.g., the daily struggle for survival and basketball viewed as a way out of the ghetto). Demystifying certain racial stereotypes, Brooks explains that even God-given skills must be developed through hard work and dedication. His book is a worthy ethnographic text.”

(Library Journal)

"Readers are taken into the world of two young basketball players battling the constraints of urban poverty and the subsequent challenges associated with using basketball as a means to rise above these constraints. . . . Brooks was able to gain access to a world that few outsiders experience or understand. Rich, detailed descriptions of events and settings, along with significant quotes by the players, coaches, parents, and other influential individuals in the young men's lives, lend credibility and validity to the ethnography's findings." (Choice)

"A very entertaining, in depth look at the high school basketball scene in the Philadelphia area. . . . Basketball allows these kids to dream--it allows them to consider that they might have a future other than hanging out on the street corner. Consider it documentation of the transformative effects of hoops." (Jeff Fox Hoops Manifesto)

Realistic view of youth basketball
By Applied Sociologist
I use this book in my sociology of sports class. One of my students is a retired NBA player: he says it's a realistic portrayal of his experience. The book is an ethnographic study - that is, personal observations, participation, interviews and notes - on Black kids in Philadelphia and their experience in after school basketball league. Coaches, parents and the teen boys are all given a chance to tell their story and the result is a very readable and engaging study of the structural forces and individual determination that lead to a basketball college scholarship. Or not. "You either a basketball player or a drug dealer" is my favorite quote. Does it reinforce stereotypes about inner city black youth? You decide.

This book is not going to be an exhaustive survey covering all aspects of rational drug design. Instead, it is going to provide critical know-how through real-world examples. Relevant case studies will be presented and analyzed to illustrate the following: how to optimize a lead compound whether one has high or low levels of structural information; how to derive hits from competitors’ active compounds or from natural ligands of the targets; how to springboard from competitors’ SAR knowledge in lead optimization; how to design a ligand to interfere with protein-protein interactions by correctly examining the PPI interface; how to circumvent IP blockage using data mining; how to construct and fully utilize a knowledge-based molecular descriptor system; how to build a reliable QSAR model by focusing on data quality and proper selection of molecular descriptors and statistical approaches. A Practical Guide to Rational Drug Design focuses on computational drug design, with only basic coverage of biology and chemistry issues, such as assay design, target validation and synthetic routes.

More garbage from the pit of hell....
By E. A. Hara
I know my review title is scathing. It deserves to be. It is the not God Who motivates this author to keep trying to pull people out of Christ's Church while promoting heresies the Church has condemned.

Typical of those who will not stop to listen or consider the truth, the author thinks he knows the Catholic Faith. What he knows is at best a sad caricature of the Faith which goes all the way back to the apostles. If this guy was ever trained at a seminary he should go there and demand his money back. It's obvious that they never taught him how to properly understand Church history, the Holy Scriptures, the Covenant of God, or any proper principles of biblical exegesis.

There is nothing more tragic than seeing these heretics create the chaos and confusion they do with their outright lies and heretical little books and pamphlets. Not a word of what they say about the Catholic Faith is true, but they act as if they are the greatest minds that ever graced chronological time and history. In truth, reading Protestant publications is like reading a kindergartener writing about his ideas on God. It is, compared to the writings of the great doctors, mystics, and illumined ones of 2000 years of Chruch history, simplistic nonsense of a high caliber trying to pass itself off as intelligensia.

Any good Catholic apologist would be able to trash this guy in a debate in about 20 minutes.

As far as I am concerned, it gets no stars from me, but the server will not allow me to post that way.

Great little booklet for Catholics
By Tom
What Every Catholic Should Ask by ex-Catholic and Evangelical Christian, James G. McCarthy, is a wonderful little booklet that will explain God's simple plan of salvation to your Catholic family and friends.

The following books, also by McCarthy, examine Roman Catholic theology much more thoroughly:
*The Gospel According to Rome: Comparing Catholic Tradition and the Word of God
*Talking with Catholic Friends and Family: Understanding How They Think and Feel, Why They Trust in Tradition, What the Bible Teaches
*Conversations With Catholics
*Letters Between a Catholic and an Evangelical

McCarthy also authored the pamphlet, Roman Catholicism: What You Need to Know (Quick Reference Guides).

Great tool for those fearful of leaving what is comfortable
By Marilyn Mcgregor
Although I did find this book to be not as powerful as it could have been, and lacking scripture references as to why many Catholic practices are against Scripture, I did think that it was a good book to be given to any Catholic that is dealing with spirits of fear and religion. It does not mention the term "Born Again" which is a plus because that term tends to put so many people off...because they don't understand its meaning.

I think that if you can get your Catholic family member or friend to read this, then they will be more open, later, to something even more convicting, revealing and revelatory to them.

Multiple Authorship and the Myth of Solitary Genius, by Jack Stillinger

This is a study of the collaborative creation behind literary works that are usually considered to be written by a single author. Although most theories of interpretation and editing depend on a concept of single authorship, many works are actually developed by more than one author. Stillinger examines case histories from Keats, Wordsworth, Coleridge, Mill, and T.S. Eliot, as well as from American fiction, plays, and films, demonstrating that multiple authorship is a widespread phenomenon. He shows that the reality of how an author produces a work is often more complex than is expressed in the romantic notion of the author as solitary genius. The cumulative evidence revealed in this engaging study indicates that collaboration deserves to be included in any account of authorial achievement.

Review

"It is refreshing...to see the case against 'genius' or authorial autonomy made in so straightforwardly empirical a fashion, with a good editor's characteristic fidelity to awkward particulars."--Times Literary Supplement

"Makes a valuable contribution to ongoing debates on interpretation....Stillinger's book should open up fruitful lines of research and investigation."--Studies in the Novel

"Jack Stillinger has written a remarkable book. It ought to have a wrenching effect on literary criticism and its practitioners."--Journal of English and Germanic Philology

"It is the major achievement of Stillinger's book to detail the facts of multiple authorship that we have been either too blind to see or too prisoned in our romantic myth of authorship to acknowledge....A clear theory of multiplicity relies upon such scholarly identification of authors and versions as Stillinger himself has so brilliantly exemplified."--Wordsworth Circle

"Authoritative scholarly study - balanced, readable, knowledgeable, skillfully argued, and soundly documented."--Studies in Romanticism

Not for beginners
By D. S. Heersink
Logic has an elegant simplicity to it that this author tries valiantly to capture, but fails. If one is already acquainted with propositional and predicate calculus, this is a joy to read for its elegance (something often attributed to Mates, but I think erroneously). This is a second-course, not a first encounter, text. But once the foundations of logical theory are laid, this is worthy of beholding the same concepts from a purely mathematical perspective.

A Solid and Well-Written Introduction to Propositional and Predicate Logic
By AssemblyTimeConstant
D. S. Heersink comments in his review that this book is not for beginners; I think he very much mistaken. I was lucky to encounter this book early. It quite carefully develops the concepts involved (in particular it carefully explains what is expected of the operation of implication -- this point can confuse some students and Stolyar goes out of his way to explain the special truth-functional notion of implication and its relation to the more general concept of "conditionals," the idea of entailment and meaningful content, &c.).

After carefully developing the concepts in an informal way, the book delves into formal systems. I think that too many books spend too much time on the informal aspects and only negatively impact comprehension by waiting (and waiting...and waiting...) to introduce more formal matters. Stolyar always indicates alternative notational conventions, so that readers are not confused on encountering different textbooks.

The book covers briefly the use of logic for designing logic circuits, and in both its bibliography and footnotes provides further references on the subjects it discusses (including sources on the history of logic, notably Kneale and Kneale's "The Development of Logic"). The book was written quite a while ago, so the sources and some of the content are dated (next to no model theory, though by page 48 at least the general idea of metalogical features is introduced...probably the most sophisticated text it refers to is Kleene's "Introduction to Metamathematics," which is once again in print thanks to Isha Press International, though Kleene too suffers from a lack of model theory).

Different people do learn in different ways. I would categorize this book for "the serious student" -- not that it is particularly difficult to dive into, but for the purposes of (for instance) the most elementary of philosophy-logic-or philosophical logic classes, yes, yes, the formal development may not be necessary. And since it only touches on the aspect of circuit design, if this happens to be the reason you are interested in logic, you may wan to look elsewhere (though I would urge gaining a general comprehension before pursuing circuit-design or computer science applications).

But judge for yourself: there is a "Look Inside" preview available, and plenty of information on the Dover Publications website. The book is cheap: even if you don't like it (and don't return it) you will only lose a few bucks. But don't fret. I think it will be worth your investment.
