Super helpful introduction

I recently moved to Poland for a short term work assignment. I don't speak any Polish and only had about a week's notice, so I needed something that would help me learn some basics quickly. This book was very helpful with learning everyday phrases and common words. It explains the pronunciation of words in an easy to understand manner and provides countless examples of conversations and explanations of cultural quirks. It's definitely a good choice for those who might be traveling to Poland and would like to understand a bit of the language and culture upon arrival.

GOOD IF YOU'VE NEVER USED THE POLISH LANGUAGE AND ARE STARTING FROM SCRATCH !

I learned Polish as a child, but after my dad and grandparents died I didn't use it and forgot a lot. This book is a good refresher. Since I already knew how to read Polish, the section on pronunciation didn't help me, but if you have never used the Polish language - its really good. The descriptions of how to say various letter combinations are very clear and would be useful to a beginner. This is a good beginner's book for conversational Polish.

Outstanding Introduction to Polish Language

This book is not for dummies, but it is excellent as an introduction to the language. It was a fabulous help as I prepared for travel to Poland. The book includes a CD that presents all-aural examples and a text that explained all the basic grammar, with essential vocabulary lists and sample sentences. I was exceedingly well-prepared for travel, having used this in conjunction with other media. Does not say the sentence in English, only Polish, but gives the situation or context. I used it for several months of listening to train my ear whenever I drove anywhere, before beginning to take notes from the book. The notebook that resulted was most helpful, even after I was in the country. Ms. Gabryanczyk has done an outstanding job of presenting practice in initial aural immersion and written practice.

A good story, but lacks something from the first.

Yes! Much longer than the first book! Mr. Simmonds continues to write wonderfully and kept my attention over the period of 4 or 5 hours that it took me to read it. Avis is back at it, and this time with a few more twists and turns, he makes and loses friends(rather quickly, I might add). I both like and hate what he has done to a few of the main characters, especially Tina's family. I'll be back for the third installment, but it will be with some trepidation.

Pros:
Adds a depth to some of the characters who had been rather flat.
I didn't feel as lost in certain parts. It didn't feel rushed or like Mr. Simmonds had forgotten to include something.
The story again blew me out of the water at certain points. (I was sure a certain JG was definitely evil).

Cons:
Again, I don't like how all of Tina's family is turned into a sniveling mass of cowardice. (Especially Ernie).
Certain parts of the plot felt much more predictable this time.
Tina and JG's relationship feels forced. Especially for two thirteen-year-olds.

I would like to give this a score somewhere between 4 and 5, but closer to 4 this time around.

So after reading the first one, I read the second. I like the characters. Good development and plot. Believe this would be a good read for any age. Some of the characters did seem a little weak compared to first book, hence the star rating but would definitely read more of this series if they came out.

Great Book!

This book kept me on the edge of my seat with the aspect of mystery and thrill! I have read the Harry Potter series 4 times and after reading this book and the first Avis Blackthorn book I am pleased to say this book was quite similar in many aspects but had a completely different and magical plot to it that I thoroughly enjoyed! I highly recommend this book to anyone who likes a bit of magical reading!

interesting read

I was looking for a book on networking and after reading both the positive and negative reviews, decided to go with this book. After finishing the book, I will say that I am surprised by it- in both a good and bad way. Let me explain...

The author has built his career in marketing. He has held the CEO position for a number of companies he's worked at. This book is more suited to those with the same professional background or those who have similar career aspirations. This is no regular book on networking but more like a book on power-networking. I do not have that kind of background or plan to have a career anywhere close to his or pursue a career in that field so some of his advice is not for me. Being an introvert, some of his advice I won't be able to easily do, too. (So if you are an introvert, you may need to get another book but this book does have some valuable pieces of advice).

After getting through almost half of the book, I did feel like a lot of the contents would not be applicable to me. I did keep an open mind and kept reading. I'm glad I did. In the second half of the book I did find a lot more that I could apply to or adapt to my own life. I think that's what's important to keep in mind when reading this book--think of how you can adapt his ideas into your own life. I am only at the entry-level in my professional career but some of his advice like expanding your network via dinner parties and not keeping score when asking someone a favor or doing someone a favor are great pieces of advice that I can implement in my life.

Very Intriguing Insight

In Never Eat Alone: And Other Secrets to Success, One Relationship at a Time, Keith Ferrazzi teaches people how to build lifelong relationships that will bring them success and get them ahead in the world of business. This book is aimed toward college students and graduates who are looking to further, or maybe even start, a career in business. Besides writing this book, Ferrazzi gets his point across to people through lectures at colleges and grad schools. It is a valuable book because there are methods to learn in it that are not taught in a standard classroom. His book is divided into four main sections each aimed toward teaching the reader different skill sets: The Mind-Set, The Skill Set, Turning Connections into Compatriots, and Trading Up and Giving Back. Ferrazzi supports all of his arguments very well by using real life examples from his own experience and by adding stories about famous people at the end of some of the chapters to further confirm his advice.
In the Mind-Set portion of his book he teaches readers how to become a member of the “club” and then he discusses his “Networking Action Plan”: a way to write down and accomplish specific goals. Ferrazzi did a good job of relating to the average person by telling his back story. He grew up in a working class family and first observed the higher classes while he was a caddy at a country club. He connected with the common people reading his book. Ironically enough, this is a book about connecting with people which he is so clearly good at. Ferrazzi’s explanation of his observations during this time is very descriptive, showing the readers what they should be doing. His discussion of his “Networking Action Plan” was also very helpful as well. He outlines a specific way to write your plan in order to make it simple to connect and succeed. Ferrazzi is clear and concise and does not leave the reader with any questions about what to do.
The Skill-Set section mainly discusses how to connect with people, what to do when connected, and how to follow-up. According to Ferrazzi, the key to success in anything is to follow-up, an action that many people may overlook without Ferrazzi’s information. Ferrazzi has tons of contacts in his network that he would not have known without following up. They range from John Pepper, a CEO that Ferrazzi had researched and found out he had also gone to Yale and had known a mutual friend, to Arnold Palmer, the well known golfer. Ferrazzi doesn’t just say to make connections with people; he is incredibly helpful and specifically lists people that can be connectors: relatives, current colleagues, neighbors, people in your religious congregation, and many more.
Turning Connections into Compatriots is about what to do when following-up with people results in them being in your network. Ferrazzi talks a great deal about dinner parties and their importance to him. He lists number of guests to invite, where they should be seated, and how to have a beautiful setting. Ferrazzi gives tips on how to host the best dinner party and to gain the friendship, and hopefully business, of everyone invited.
In the final section, Trading Up and Giving Back, Ferrazzi explains the importance of being interesting and memorable. He teaches readers to build their brand by one of his sayings: “be distinct or extinct” (226). Basically, Ferrazzi says there are tons of people in the world who want to become CEO’s and in order to succeed, you need to be different. As the title of his book says, never eat alone. Be out of the ordinary and persistent in connecting to the people you need to, and want to, connect to.
Ferrazzi is a credible and resourceful source for any person looking to expand their network. He provides insight into how to get this done and his life is proof that it is possible. He is very successful with these methods. Ferrazzi was CMO at Deloitte Consulting and CEO at YaYa Media and he is now founder and CEO of Ferrazzi Greenlight. The network of people that he has connected to, span across the country and they are the reason for his success. Without other peoples help, we are nothing. This book is very engaging and enjoyable, I personally found myself losing track of time reading it. I would definitely recommend it to anyone looking to expand their network or even anyone remotely interested in the unknown aspects of the business world.

This Should Be a Networking Bible

A friend recommended this book for her book club. I've never been good at networking and figured why not learn as much as I could. This book was perfect for the "beginner" networker who has no idea where to start. Several of Keith's points resonated with me.

Point one: help other people! There's an old expression I've heard that you should be good to the people on your way to the top because they're the same people you'll pass on your way back down. Truer words have never been spoken. I've learned the hard way that when it comes to getting a job or a client, it has nothing to do with what you know but WHO you know. Keith's book addresses that issue. He points out that you should help other people in any way you can even if there's nothing in it for you. If you have two friends who could use each other's help, introduce them to each other. If an acquaintance approaches you and asks if you know of anyone hiring, call up your contacts and see how you can be of help. Yes, you may not know that person well but think about what happens if they get the job. They in turn may be able to help you influence a potential client. It's all about paying it forward with significant dividends.

Point two: remember people's birthday! Yes, it might sound juvenile but believe it or not, people actually DO care that you remembered their birthday. It touches their soul more than they care to admit. Keith recommended that when you meet someone ask them for their birth month and day (no year necessary). Technology makes it so simple for you to keep track and actually pops up a reminder on that day. You don't necessarily need to buy flowers or anything expensive, a simple card in the mail, email or phone call will do wonders.

Point three: timing is everything! After one of Keith's speaking engagements, several people approached him to say thank you or what not. When he got back to his hotel room an email was already waiting for him. It was from one of the guys who had approached him after his speech. Keith pointed out that plenty of thoughtful emails had streamed through his inbox over the next couple of days, but he remembers the very first one he received.

Those three are only the tip of the iceberg in what is covered in Keith's book. Again, it's honest advice that you can apply tomorrow for use in the real world. You don't have to be rich or influential in order to benefit from Keith's advice, you just have to want to be personable. GET THIS BOOK!!!!

Great book for kids and adults

This book was published in 1970. As a child 40 years ago I checked this book out from the local library and built most of the flying airplane models from the straightforward plans printed full size in the book. I recently bought the book used for the memories it evoked. This is also a great book for children of today who need a break from computers and other electronic devices. There is no experience comparable to building something from scratch and seeing it work, something which children and even some adults may need to learn. Go to any hobby shop and buy the balsa wood. The projects are mostly airplanes, but you can also build a boat, a car, a kite, etc. Highly recommended.

Where are the e-Figures in the Kindle edition?

My big gripe with all the Biopsy Interpretation Series is that if you buy a Kindle edition, there does not appear to be any access to all the e-Figures referred to in the books

This book along with volume 1 of the same series are excellent references to use when faced with difficult GI cases. Well-written, straight to the point and full of great tips. Highly recommneded.

A Clear Explanation of How We Got to Where We Are

Friedman offers a compelling, well-researched paradigm for understanding how the US arrived at its current level of dysfunctional politics. His hypothesis, restated throughout the book is that the US, as well as the rest of the planet, is being subjected to three relentless, ineluctable forces: the exponential development of technology, the forces of globalization and concomitant interdependence, and severe climate change, all of which have altered forever the complacent stability to which we had become accustomed. He argues further that the pace of change (speed) as well as the rate of change (exponential) are exceeding in many cases, the capacity of individuals and societies to adapt to change, while politicians--glued to their own narrow ideologies and even narrower political bases--provide only simplistic, quixotic and ultimately futile responses.

Though I could have done without the plethora of folksy interjections, as a whole the argument made is compelling, well documented and (for me) fairly frightening. In the closing chapters of the book, Friedman offers several common sense, pragmatic solutions and manages to convey a sense of optimism that eventually, the world will be capable of adapting in a manner that improves global civilization. Given the facts and strong arguments made in preceding chapters however, the optimism seems unfounded;; particularly given the lack of political will for the heterodox approach that the author justifiably feels that circumstances require.

I've given this work five stars because it has helped me, more than any other source I've read, to develop a reasonably clear understanding of how we got to where we are. I do not share the author's optimism, but I appreciate the clarity of thought, the ability to synthesize what appear to be disparate trends, and finally, the insightful, cogent analyses.

Friedman's 3rd Seminal Work

I had one of those nights where too many ideas prevented me to sleep. I had pre-ordered Friedman's new book and it was now available, so I started in. I have not endorsed all of his books, but two profoundly impacted me. Lexus and the Olive Tree and World is Flat are seminal. After racing through the beginning, I can tell this one will be as well.

No, It's Not Going to Be O.K.

Friedman writes a usually excellent New York Times column about foreign affairs. However, when he moves into areas such as economics (eg. supporting globalization - despite the obvious detrimental impact on the U.S.), technology, and sometimes politics, the quality drops considerably. Unfortunately, this book is mostly about issues other than foreign affairs, though that is not to say he has nothing worthwhile to say. However, his basic message - 'That it is going to be O.K.' remains to be seen.

It is definitely true that today's pace and extent of change is far faster and broader than it was hundreds of years ago (glacial, at best), or even 50 years ago. Others have pointed this out, most notably Ray Kurzweil. A major underlying factor - Moore's Law, well expounded upon elsewhere. DNA research, along with research in general (eg. data analytics) is also now accelerating - at a rate faster than Moore's Law, while electronics in general have gone through many revisions. Another has been the recognition of the need for clean power - solar power is also improving at a rate faster than Moore's Law. Now even the future of work itself is being threatened.

Not all these changes have helped Main Street - the most obvious example being globalization. Another is financialization's now also hollowing out America. And some important segments continue to resist/avoid change - U.S. healthcare (world's most expensive, despite being non-universal and often of relatively low quality), our public schools (again, the world's most expensive - except Luxembourg, while only middling in achievement), and the world's production of CO2. And, productivity hasn't participated in these rapid improvements, nor is it likely to - unless robot growth soon escalates, bringing another set of major societal problems.

Meanwhile, America has gone from being the world's greatest creditor nation to its largest debtor nation while accumulating a $13 trillion merchandise trade deficit since 1980. Byproducts include lessened/lost opportunities for today's students when they enter the world of work, a hollowing out of our manufacturing and research capabilities - and concomitant greater reliance on other nations to maintain our standard of living, enormous unfunded health care and pension liabilities, an adult population ranking relatively low skill-wise vs. other nations, and a political system paralyzed and dominated by rancor, ideology, childish militarism/nationalism/bullying, falsehoods, and half-truths by both sides. Our military is far too large to financially support, vastly diminished in power by asymmetric warfare too lethal to challenge anyone and everyone, and enemies far too numerous (including Middle Eastern terrorists) for us to continue to act like we run the world.

Meanwhile, we continue pandering to Israel, making little effort to conserve oil, trying to manage China, Russia, Iran, and most every other locale. Eventually, these problems will blow up in our face - Friedman should focus on addressing them.
