Uncle Sam Wants You: World War I and the Making of the Modern American Citizen, by Christopher Capozzola

Based on a rich array of sources that capture the voices of both political leaders and ordinary Americans, Uncle Sam Wants You offers a vivid and provocative new interpretation of American political history, revealing how the tensions of mass mobilization during World War I led to a significant increase in power for the federal government. Christopher Capozzola shows how, when the war began, Americans at first mobilized society by stressing duty, obligation, and responsibility over rights and freedoms. But the heated temper of war quickly unleashed coercion on an unprecedented scale, making wartime America the scene of some of the nation's most serious political violence, including notorious episodes of outright mob violence. To solve this problem, Americans turned over increasing amounts of power to the federal government. In the end, whether they were some of the four million men drafted under the Selective Service Act or the tens of millions of home-front volunteers, Americans of the World War I era created a new American state, and new ways of being American citizens.

Review

"This book demonstrates the singular significance of America's brief but crucial experience with modern war in 1917 and 1918."--Michael S. Neiberg, The Journal of American History

"But do you want Uncle Sam? Capozzola's fresh history of the American past is a bracing challenge to the American present--and future."--James Carroll, author of House of War

"Capozzola does an excellent job of rendering the jingoistic, dogmatic mindset that characterized the country at a crucial time.... All this the author captures in eloquently rendered and assiduously researched detail."--Publishers Weekly (starred review)

"A well crafted and important work that adds critical depth to the historical understanding of this transformative period of American history. Capozzola convincingly argues that during World War I the power of the state grew at the expense of citizens' rights."--Andrew Wiest, History: Reviews of New Books

"A sharp sense of irony and dry wit undergird this eloquent history of how Americans remade their understanding of the relationship between state and citizen in the crucible of World War I. We now live with the massive structures of state power that were first constructed then; we share many of that generation's obligations and anxieties. Can we learn from their mistakes?"--Linda K. Kerber, author of No Constitutional Right to Be Ladies: Women and the Obligations of Citizenship

"Uncle Sam Wants You immerses readers in one of the formative moments of the twentieth century, when the fervent production of war-time loyalty collided with much weaker voices of civil liberties and dissent. In an eloquent blend of historical narrative and political theory, Capozzola pursues the question: what can the state legitimately demand of its citizens? This is a powerfully told and eye-opening history whose implications will bring readers right up to the present."--Daniel T. Rodgers, author of Atlantic Crossings: Social Politics in a Progressive Age

"The stresses of wartime inevitably change a society, both in the short and the long term. Christopher Capozzola's Uncle Sam Wants You brilliantly illuminates the powerful and often unnoticed impact of World War I on American culture. By so doing, it sheds essential light on contemporary controversies that will affect the United States for years to come."--Geoffrey R. Stone, University of Chicago

"Capozzola brings politics into social history, and paints a more vivid picture of the pervasiveness of wartime repression than has so far been available...readers are unlikely to find a fresher, more substantial exploration of the repressive atmosphere of World War I anytime soon." -- The History Teacher

"You will gain many fresh insights by reading Capozzola's finely nuanced study about how the domestic impact of the war did and did not change the conception of what it meant to be an American citizen."--Michael E. Parrish, Journal of Interdisciplinary History

"Capozzola succeeds in bringing political theory to the ground level .Engaged writing style and compelling analysis will make the book useful in advanced undergraduate and graduate history, political science, and political theory courses alike."-Beatrice McKenzie, The Historian

"Capozzola writes with a vividness and verve .Essential reading not just for experts in the period but for anyone interested in the broader themes of American history, especially those wanting to learn about the development of its political culture."-Steven Casey, War in History

"Readers of Capozzola's book will be struck by the stark contrasts concerning US participation in the Great War and the current war on terror."-CHOICE

"Subtle, complex, and remarkably balanced .A very well-written book on a period of American history just now starting to get the scholarly attention it deserves .A book all historians of modern America should not only be familiar with, but be able to enjoy reading as well."-Mark E. Grotelueschen, Journal of World History

"This is a fine study of the way US society was changed by the stresses of war and society as well as to the history of the US." --Times Higher Education Supplement

INDIVIDUALITY MEETS TOTAL WAR
By Robert H. Adams
Great read, especially for those like me who got curious about the dichotomy in American life between federal power and social goals on the one hand, and individual freedom on the other. While the War Between the States certainly advanced federal power, this history reveals that it was World War I and the first unified national effort in global war that the necessity of federal controls to produce a monumental war effort ran headlong into the culture of individualism, and the greater influence of state and local governments that pre-existed it. Without the experience of World war I, it would likely have been impossible for the US to have mobilized as it did for World War II, the Nazis might very well have won, the Japanese might very well have held onto China, and the US would be a second rate power, the Soviet Union a hodgpodge of German colonies, and Europe a pale poor place.

Very intriguing topic, Capozzola provides the reader with an alternative view of home font athmosphere during WWI. He brings to light the many intricacies of volunteerism, coercion, patriotism, and civic responsibilities. Highly recommended for individual pursing a master's degree in American History, especially if ones emphasis is on 20th century social history.

A Good Read and Solid History Told with Verve
By In Boston
Capozzola brings life to the days of American involvement in WWI and a period in our history few learn about in school. The effects of Selective Service, the marginalizing of minority populations by their fellow citizens and the many stories, all well-documented, should be read by everyone lest we don't forget our real past. A good read as well!

MISLEADING REVIEWS
By F. wheeler
i think some of these reviews shouldnt be on this page. these reviews apply to the first edition that had serious flaws. this is the updated and expanded version that was released oct 2009. these reviews are from the book that was released in 2006. they actually have the same reviews listed under the older version that was flawed.

when i brought this book, there were no reviews for it yet. i purchased this book the second day it was released in oct 2009.
i think amazon does this book a disservice by applying the same reviews to this book. it misleads people into thinking it has major flaws.

if you look at the titles it clearly says "updated and expanded version". maybe amazon used the review to imply it is a hot commodity(and it is), but by having the same outdated reviews for a book that was revised in 2009 seems a little self defeating and manipulative at the same time. being as though the reviews by some of the people are complaints about the older version.

even with the flaws, if you read the reviews below, you will see that many people also enjoyed the book. the only complaints came from hardcore geeky fans(no disrespect). most were somewhat minor, like the info for a few characters being off. but the artwork and lay-out is beautiful. and these complaints are fixed in this version, and thats why the complaints dont apply.

i think everyone will enjoy this book. as an artist who enjoys creating my own comic book characters and superheroes, the action poses are a tremendous reference for my characters. that was the main reason i bought this massive book. page after page of action poses and fight scenes. im not a hardcore collector at all! i enjoy comics but i dont live and die by them.

i used to flip through comics to get reference poses and inspiration and this book gives me more references and inspiration and insight than any book i ever came across.

if you want a good book thats informative i would suggest this book. by the way, i am turning into that geeky guy now. reading this encyclopedia has given me info on characters i never knew existed and exposed me to a world of supereroes that goes back 5 decades or more. i didnt realize some of my favorite and most familiar characters from childhood were around for so long.

i guess i had no concept of time when it came to the characters from marvel.
all in all, you cant be dissapointed in this book. even someone whos not a fan will enjoy the material in this book. hope this review helped

A Marvel fan's dream
By ziffel66
NOTE: This review is for the NEW and UPDATED Marvel Encyclopedia. When I wrote this review, the new version's reviews were separate from the previous version. Since then, Amazon has combined the reviews, and this is a shame, because the updated version corrects most if not all of the problems found in the previous version. /END NOTE

I received this book on it's release day, as I was very excited about it, and wanted it as quickly as possible. I was not disappointed! The book is 400 pages on high quality, glossy print, with brilliant artwork, and color that pops off the page.

The book is meant as a reference, and includes basically every Marvel character ever created with a short bio for some, and up to 4 pages for the Marvel superstars like Spider-Man, Captain America, and Wolverine.

I have the DC Encyclopedia as well, and it's great too, but the text is so small. The Marvel 2009 (Updated & Expanded) Encyclopedia improves this greatly with a font that's at least 2 sizes bigger for all entries, and many lead-in paragraphs include even larger fonts. This was a huge relief to my older eyes.

The encyclopedia includes more than just A to Z entries for heroes and villains, it also has entries for Marvel events, such as the Civil War. Non-American Marvel characters are included as well, including UK hero Captain Britain, and Alpha Flight, a Canadian team.

Extremely thorough, giant glossy pages, incredible artwork, and excellent layout (with a highly readable font) make this a masterwork, and a must-have for any Marvel fan. Amazon's price makes it a no-brainer.

The only drawback? Get your arms ready, this thing weighs 5.5 pounds!

Genes VII, by B. Lewin

Oxford University Press is proud to present GENES VII--the latest edition of Benjamin Lewin's best-selling textbook. This authoritative work provides an integrated account of the structure and function of genes and incorporates all the latest research in the field.

THE MOST SIGNIFICANT REORGANIZATION TO DATE
The power of direct analysis of the genome has made a significant difference in the approach of GENES VII. In a departure from previous editions, which started with a traditional analysis of formal genetics, the new edition begins with the molecular properties of the gene itself. The text is now reorganized to begin with the concept of genes as a segment of DNA coding for protein, and then proceeds directly to the characterization of the genome in terms of its content of genes.

INTEGRATED APPROACH
GENES VII first explains the structure and function of the gene as a means to revealing the operation of the genome as a whole, and offers an integrated approach to prokaryotes and eukaryotes. The gene is considered from all aspects, including:
* Basic forms
* The numbers and relationships among genes in a genome
* Their packaging into chromosomes
* The process of gene expression from transcription through translation
* The reproduction and safeguarding of the gene structure
* Aspects of the overall circuitry through which genotype determines phenotype
STREAMLINED, FULL-COLOR DESIGN
GENES VII has been considerably restructured and reorganized to highlight the latest research and technology. It contains more than 800 full color illustrations that are extremely useful in teaching the key concepts presented in the book.
GENES VII CONTAINS NEW, GROUNDBREAKING INFORMATION ON:
* New technologies that count and compare expressed genes
* Accessory proteins (chaperones)
* The role of the proteasome
* Licensing
* Reverse translocation
* Connections between repair and recombination systems and human diseases
* Connections between the structure of chromosomal material and control of gene expression in eukaryotes
* The process of X chromosome inactivation
* Imprinting
* Control of gene expression by epigenetic changes
* The enzymatic activities that control chromatin structure and affect the regulatory process
* Archeael enzymes
* The mechanism of RNA editing in lower eukaryotes
* The role of RAG genes
* Interactions within and between pathways
* The use of protein degradation to control passage through the cell cycle
* Programmed cell death
* Telomerase and its role in carcinogenesis. And much more!

I read some of the reviews about the book and ultimately determined it has been rejected by professors for not fitting into their current power point slides. But for me, someone just looking to expand their knowledge base it has been a great deal.

A definite improvement over Genes VI
By Dr. Lee D. Carlson
In this edition, the author dramatically departs from the last one, both in content and order of presentation, and in the author's enthusiasm. He is clearly very excited about the developments in genetics that have taken place in the last decade, and this shows up everywhere in his writing. The book would be of interest to anyone interested in genetics, whether they are students, curious laymen, or mathematicians or physicists interested in the molecular biology behind genetics. The only minus to the book is the lack of exercises, the absence of which makes the understanding of the material more time consuming. A good background in biochemistry would be very helpful in the reading of the book.
The book is a sizable one, and space does not permit a detailed review, but there are some areas in the book that stand out as being exceptionally well-written, thought-provoking, or helpful. As someone interested in bioinformatics, mathematical genetics, and mathematical modeling of metabolic processes, I read this book from the standpoint of these interests. With this in mind, some of the more interesting discussions in the book include: 1. The author constantly asks questions throughout the book, which help to clarify the issues and motivate the concepts in the book. He also points out the questions that are unanswered up to the date of publication, giving the research-oriented reader opportunities for further investigation. 2. The discussion on mutations, with the author pointing out the difference between point mutations and insertions/deletions, the role of revertants, and the occurrence of silent mutations. I wish he would have elaborated in more detail on the experiments that identified the mutations responsible for Mendel's famous wrinkled-pea mutants, i.e. the inactivation of the gene for a starch branching enzyme. 3. The discussion on the C-value paradox and the presence of large amounts of noncoding DNA in the larger genomes. This is an interesting problem for optimization theory. 4. The discussion on the mechanisms for gene reorganization. Again, this is an interesting question in optimization theory, especially the divergence between introns as a stabilizing factor that suppresses the occurrence of unequal crossing-over. The author gives examples of the effects of unequal crossing-over, such as human globin gene clusters. 5. The crossover fixation model and the time scales needed relative to mutation. 6. Satellite DNAs and their role in DNA fingerprinting. From an information theory standpoint, satellite DNAs are interesting since they are essentially long strings of DNA of low complexity. 7. The life cycle of mRNA and the neat electron micrograph illustrating beautifully the dynamics of gene expression. 8. The accuracy of translation; the author outlining the critical stages at which errors can be made. 9. The discussion on phage strategies. The dynamics of phages is very amenable to mathematical modeling. 10. They topological manipulation of DNA. Some results from the mathematical theory of knots, such as the writhing and twisting numbers, are playing a role here. 11. The discussion on transposons. The author speaks of the mobility of transposons, and the physical mechanisms employed for their transfer are elaborated on in detail. The theory of transposons has to rank as one of the most fascinating in all of genetics. 12. DNA rearrangements and their consequence, such as the creation of new genes and the switching of expression of one gene to another. The discussion on Crown gall disease is particularly interesting. 13. The discussion on the visualization of genes during transcription and the differences in the experimental results. 14. The regulation of transcription and the control mechanisms for eukaryotes. 15. RNA editing and how information is extracted from various sources. 16. The discussion on the development process in Drosophila. This chapter should begin to satisfy the reader who is curious about the molecular basis of development.
Because of its high quality, this book will no doubt continue to be one of the canonical texts in genetics to be used now and in the future to prepare students and researchers in genetics. The career opportunities opening up in bioinformatics and genetic engineering have mushroomed in recent years, a lot of this driven by the needs of drug discovery and development. In this connection, the author asks the following question in the book: "If we could read out the entire sequence of DNA comprising the genome of some organism and interpret it in terms of proteins and regulatory regions, could we then construct an organism by controlled expression of the proper genes?" One can only hope that the answer to this question will be yes, as this will create one of the most exciting of all professions in the 21st century: the genetic designer.

Thumbs down from a frustrated professor
By A Customer
Lewin's Genes series has dominated the market in Molecular Biology textbooks ... Unfortunately, its monopoly status seems to have insulated Lewin, his illustrators, and his editors from the corrective influences of a competitive market...so far.
I am in my second year of teaching from this book and I find it very frustrating. Lewin's writing style is unclear, difficult and distracting. Tangential ideas and subjects appear out of nowhere in the middle of chapters for no logical reason. As I write this, I should be preparing my lecture for Chapter 26 (Signal transduction). Why does this chapter start with a discussion of transporters? Later parts contain sentences that are almost unreadable and way too much detail about the alphabet soup of different kinases.
Although it is much better than some earlier editions, Genes VII still contains a variety of major and minor errors, including serious problems in explaining how lagging strand DNA synthesis is coordinated in the replication fork - several experts tell me that the model in figure 13.16 is simply wrong. The holoenyme does not lose one of its catalytic subunits with each cycle of Okazaki fragment synthesis. The clamp simply lets go and the clamp loader grabs the next fragment with a new clamp. I realized this semester that I had been ignoring the book and teaching what I knew from seminars.
Even when the content they describe is basically correct, figures in Genes VII can be astonishingly bad. Homologous recombination is illustrated with DNA strands that are only color coded and where the 5' and 3' ends are not labeled (Chapter 14). Unlabeled spliceosomal proteins change their color codes in the middle of the pathway - transesterification to form the lariat also seems to change U2 into U1 (Figure 22.10).
I am hoping that one of the newer competitors for Genes VII will prove to be a suitable replacement. I am examining Robert Weaver's Molecular Biology - I like what I've read so far - and should get a review copy of T.A. Brown's Genomes soon. ...Disclaimer - I have no financial interest in the success of any of these. All of them are available on Amazon.
By the way, I do have a Ph.D. in Molecular Biology. I'm not an expert in all of the material covered by Genes VII, but I was trained in labs whose work is cited in Genes VII.

From School Library Journal
Grade 5-7–This amusing anthology of 10 short stories, by authors such as Avi, Angela Johnson, David Lubar, and Rachel Vail, will resonate with students everywhere. Sarah Weeks's "Experts, Incorporated," explores how a name can lead to horrific nicknames, like that of the protagonist: Curtain, Rod. Readers will cringe at their own inadequacies, sympathize with the embarrassment of the characters, groan at the familiar odor of "fish sticks in the lunchroom," and cheer when the shame of being in "Special Reading" results in self-awareness and new friends. James Proimos's "The Grade School Zone" is a comic-strip story of a boy's Italian grandmother who fractures the English language. Lee Wardlaw's "The Desk" centers on the mystery and magic arising from the seat of an itinerant circus student, and David Rice's "Tied to Zelda" describes a crush on a friend in school. A skillfully written and engaging collection that's sure to be popular.–Rebecca Sheridan, Easttown Library & Information Center, Berwyn, PA

From Booklist
Gr. 4-7. Editor Mercado brings together 10 short stories (including one told in comic-book form) about children's lives in school. In these first-person narratives, sharply defined details and keenly observed nuances of school life often set the stage for moments of wit, surprise, realization, and tenderness. Authors include Avi, Angela Johnson, David Lubar, Terry Trueman, and Rachel Vail. Readers looking for humor will find plenty of it as the stories unfold. In one, a would-be thief settles for kidnapping a boy and his English teacher and finds that he has met his match. In another, a group project in science suddenly makes a U-turn, from moldy disaster to unexpected triumph. At the end of each story is a "School Report," in which the author identifies his or her "Favorite Cafeteria Meal," "Worst Smell at School," "Best Prank Ever Played," and so on. Most of these autobiographical sections include school photos of the writers as children. An entertaining roundup. Carolyn Phelan

Fantastic!

I bought this book as a back to school gift for my 11 year old niece and ended up reading it myself. The stories are so true-to-life that anyone at any age can identify with them. I can't wait to give it to my niece; I know she'll love it!

You have to read this book
By ShaSha7
"What do I remember most about school?" is the first question asked in the introduction of the fiction book Tripping over the Lunch Lady: and Other School Stories edited by Nancy Mercado. This book features ten different school stories written by ten different children's book authors, including Angela Johnson, author of Toning the Sweeps and Heaven, both winners of a Coretta Scott King Award, Avi author of the True Confessions of Charlotte Doyle, winner of a Newberry Honor Award and Terry Trueman's author of Struck in Neutral, winner of a Michael L. Printz Honor Award.
I thought that this book was a great, easy read, and of course hilarious. Even though the target audience is middle schoolers, however people of all ages would enjoy reading this book because somehow they can relate. I found myself remember all the fun and not so fun times of middle school while reading. Also, after reading each story, I found myself going back to that first question asked in the introduction "What do I remember most about school?" and being happy that nothing as crazy as these stories happened to me while I was in middle school. The stories range from ones about the troubles of gym class, the mystery of the smell in the desk and a boy's grandmother who always yells "bussa." My favorite story had to be How I got my English A by Avi which is about a boy who is not quiet an expert at English. He says things like "I can harldy spel the alfabet," I sez. One day him and his teacher get held hostage when they go down to the basement and things only get crazy from there when they encounter a guy who also isn't great at English. By the end of the story I couldn't stop laughing, and after you read it, you won't be able to as well. So How did he get his English A? Which of the ten authors says that the worse smell at school was kids throwing up in the closet? Why is the grandma always yelling "bussa" in the story The Grade School Zone? Find out by reading Tripping Over the Lunch Lady and Other School Stories which has been said to be "In this collection of hilarious short stories, we get a double-dose of laughter, along with a side of goulash, served up by top-flight writers..."-ALAN Review and that "Students will likely see themselves in these 10 appetizing stories about the ups and many downs of school life . . . Unlike school cafeteria fare, this inviting buffet has something for everyone." -Kirkus. I hope you enjoy the book as much as I did.

Fun for the family
By amihp
I read this recently with my 2nd grader. The cover on this looked like so much fun I figured I'd give it a try. I was afraid my 7 year old would be too too young for these stories but he LOVED them. We're also very excited to have found a new author that we really like -- David Lubar! "Are too, are not, R2-D2" a line from Lubar's story which is constantly recited at our house. We also really enjoyed the mini author bios at the end of each story.

A must have for traditional Ju Jitsu historians!
By Nadeem Ansari
This book is a reprinting of the original text from 1952. For me personally it is extremely valuable and I'm grateful that it is available. This is the only known English book about Yamato Ryu Jujitsu. It was originally titled "The Secret Teachings of Self-Defense, Jujitsu of the Yamato School" I recommend it to all historians of the art and would say that it is a must have for anyone who wants to obtain a picture in time of that era.

My Sensei, Joseph C. Mandese was a student of a U.S. Navy Veteran who, I only know as Sensei Steve, he was a Nidan, but married to a daughter of the Soke of the system and she was a Yondan. The Soke had instructed Sensei Steve and others to spread the system as nearly all male heirs had been killed in World War II. Sensei Steve opened a 2nd Floor Dojo in the Morris Park Avenue area of the Bronx. The Dojo was open for only 5 years which resulted in two Shodan graduates, my Sensei and a classmate. The classmate married Sensei Steve's sister and went Sensei Steve, his wife and the classmate and his wife all went back to Japan when the Soke recalled all members of the family back. The year was 1955, I met my Sensei in 1989 and he mentioned this book and searched tirelessly to find a copy with only the cover and internal pages ripped out. After he passed away in 2003, It took me 8 years, but I found a PDF copy, which is in its' entirety. I'm sorry he isn't around to see it, but I hope this will be a beneficial source to anyone interested.

I give it 5 stars for context, and a good well thought attempt to preserve history. I am definitely biased, but I still beleive that it is a worthwhile purchase.

This is the real thing
By Steve Soos
I have a nidan (second degree black belt) in daito ryu aiki bujitsu from the honbudojo (mainline dojo in japan). I found this book very interesting. The techniques contained within are authentic Daito Ryu the order is different and probably reflects an earlier less formalized order of instruction. A great resource for anyone studying daito ryu. If what you are doing doesn't work or doesn't resemble the techniques in this book it probably isn't the real thing.

seems to be a realistic set of kata for daito ryu and some of them kempo conatined now in yagyu shingan ryu? very strange how the art was passed around especially after the last of the great masters passing away earlier this last millennium but looking deeper at the book it seems maybe the authors name has a been sightly changed maybe is this saito or sato?? either way the jutsu with in is solid can be found on other plases but is a worthy book and a worthy purchase with hopes they wont stop with juts this on text.

Review
"Folberg et al. have gathered into one comprehensive volume the experience, conceptual frameworks, and opinions of a large group of leaders who have emerged in the family mediation field over the past 25 years. These interdisciplinary authors provide in-depth views of multiple aspects of contemporary family and divorce mediation. Examined are different mediation models that are now practiced in diverse settings; techniques and strategies for managing communication, power, impasses, and common elements of the mediation process; and ways to deal with such special issues as domestic violence and working with children. This book will be enormously useful to students of dispute resolution, mediation trainers, and novice and experienced mediators seeking more clarity in an ever-expanding and changing field."--Joan B. Kelly, PhD, psychologist and past president, Academy of Family Mediators

"A terrific book--easily the best, most comprehensive text of its kind that I have seen. Having participated in the first family mediation in the Los Angeles County Conciliation Court in the early 1970's, I think this text marks the maturation of family mediation and defines it as an established profession. Included are contributions from most of the most respected and successful family mediators, beginning with basic theory and leading up to tangible advice about establishing a practice. Because of its breadth and depth, this is an excellent introductory text. It would be my first choice as a text in the training program for mediators we developed when I was the director of the Oregon Family Institute. It could also be used in courses dealing with families in transition within schools of social work or law and within a range of programs in mental health."--Hugh McIsaac, LCSW, Director (ret.), Oregon Family Institute, past Editor, Family and Conciliation Courts Review

"A landmark work in the field of conflict resolution. The authors, premier practitioners in family mediation, present a comprehensive overview of theories and approaches that can be successfully applied to resolve domestic disputes. They also share practical and effective strategies for addressing thorny issues, reaching agreements, and transforming conflict relationships for the good. This book should be read by experienced family mediators, and is highly suitable as an academic text to train the next generation of intermediaries."--Christopher Moore, PhD, author of The Mediation Process

"A comprehensive text for practitioners and educators in the fields of divorce and family mediation....This book is well written, covers many important topics, and appeals to both practitioners and educators....Advanced-level practitioners will find it an excellent review....Represents an excellent contribution to the literature on divorce and family mediation." (The Family Journal 2004-05-14)

"A comprehensive overview of family mediation that exposes readers to a variety of styles and intervention strategies....If this text were supplemental reading for mediators in training, our future mediators would have greater exposure to other perspectives, allowing them to modify their approach based upon the unique needs of families rather than hold to a purist's narrow view." (Journal of Couple & Relationship Therapy 2004-05-14)

"The chapter authors are leaders and innovators in family mediation, and professionals who work in social work, psychology, law, family health, and psychiatry. The editors have done a superb job in merging diverse writing styles and making certain that language which is particular to one discipline is translated so that all disciplines can understand it. This is a book which is practical and which will be useful to students as well as experienced practitioners in a field that is expanding and changing. I have no doubt that it is a historic landmark text, one which will be cited many times in the future." (Bulletin of the Menninger Clinic 2004-05-14)

Enticing book with excellent dating tips ;) This book pulled me in and couldn't put it down. It did get slightly predictable near the end but enjoyable none the less.

Not bad, but not as good as the first two
By Cynthia Sadler
I'm giving this book 3 stars. It's not really bad, just okay. The other books I've read in the series, Music of the Soul and A Deafening Whisper, were better. They had better plots, and I felt were much more creative. I thought that this one was fun, but a bit predictable, especially at the end.

But I'm still impressed with Erik Schubach as an author of lesbian romance. Note: not erotica, but fun romance. Given his track record, I'm still going to read the next one, Karaoke Queen.

I absolutely love the way the author pulls you into the book and makes you fall in love with each and every character. This is the third book by this author that I have read (including Music of the Soul, and A Deafening Whisper) and I have loved them all.

Chrystal and Riley make a bet to decide who can plan a better date. One date and in my opinon they were both already falling. BUT, it was still a game and neither wanted to profess it as anything more.

There is no real angst, but a lot of miscommunication. However - you will love it in the end!!!

Highly recommended.
